Watch out “Fireman Sam”!
This term Year one have been looking at the theme “All about me” and Year two “Our village”, so it was a great opportunity to visit the Arrecife fire station to take a closer look at the “people who help us and our community”.
The children were very responsible and quiet as the lady in the emergency call room explained her very important role in the station. They remembered the emergency number and learned how this call would be answered and the alert would pass on to the fireman via a very loud bell. They had a close look at the technology used to track where all the emergency vehicles were at any one time and they also realized how important it was to know their home address!
As they walked around the station they were intrigued to learn that the fireman´s shift was 24 hours and sometimes longer so the station was like their own home. It had bedrooms, kitchen and even a gym.
The fireman showed them all the different uniforms, equipment and emergency vehicles explaining in detail why they had to wear certain equipment and when they would use the different tools.
With all their knowledge the children were ready to experience what it really was like to be a fireman, they rode in the fire engine sounding the siren, they learned how to use the water hose and they even tried on the heavy fire uniform.
The pupils and staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the Arrecife fire station and their staff for a very informative and fun day out.
