In order to enhance our “Under the Sea” study theme and to ensure the children learn through their own experience, we decided to visit a local fishmonger. The children not only learnt about the variety of fish available but also increased their scientific knowledge and vocabulary related to fish.
The fishmonger named the different species of fish and pointed out which were renowned to the Canary Islands. She also explained in great detail about some fish´s special features which were due to their need to adapt to their environment or their specific diets. We learned that the “Pinto” had curious teeth because it feeds on crustaceans and needs to break the hard shells.
We were able to choose a variety of fish to take back to school to observe closer with magnifying glasses and appreciate the details in the gills, fins and scales. We then made some observational drawings.
It has been a very enriching experience. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hiperdino´s staff in Playa Blanca for their dedication and kindness.
